Joaquim Rodrigo – ENG
Biography
Joaquim José Rodrigo, was born on the 7th of July 1912 in Lisbon, city where he also passed away in 1997.
It was a self-taught painter, arrived late to painting, exhibited from 1951 in Gerais, an incipiente expressionism and off to commitments with the neorealist aesthetic. From 1954 and until the end of the decade will develop and define a strict geometric awareness of painting, much influenced by Mondrian. The year 1961 marks, however, a new change on his route, curiously coinciding with the movement of American pop art and a new emerging figuration in Europe, that could not have known. He practiced for five years ‘gross art’, a real fixation practice in symbolic terms of everyday experience or traveled memory.
