Ana Vieira – ENG

Biography

Ana Vieira was born in 1940, in Coimbra. She grew up in S. Miguel, in the Azores.
She lived and worked in Lisbon until she passed away in 2016.

She has been developing a strong body of work around the creation of environments that translates into the exploration of space, scale and paths, and consequently, into new ways of perceiving art. Sound is recurrent in her works.

Her work has been shown in many group and individual exhibitions, notably in Alternativa Zero – Tendências na Arte Portuguesa Contemporânea, organized by Ernesto de Sousa in 1977, and in the anthological exhibition that Fundação de Serralves dedicated to her in 1998. In 2010, she presented Muros de Abrigo/Shelter Walls at Centro de Arte Moderna da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, in Lisbon.

In 1985, she was awarded the joint prize by AICA – Associação Internacional de Críticos de Arte and SEC – Secretaria de Estado da Cultura.

She has worked together with different theatre companies, designing their sets and wardrobes, as in Os Sequestradores de Altona by Jean-Paul Sartre, at Teatro Tivoli in Lisboa, in 1979.

Her work is represented in several collections: Centro de Arte Moderna da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, Fundação de Serralves, Musée Cantonal des Beaux Arts of Lausanne,Fundação EDP and Fundação Carmona e Costa.
